An Architectural Assistant could either be Part 1 or Part II qualified. A Part 1 Architectural Assistant normally has a first degree in architecture, (commonly referred to as Part 1) which typically takes three or four years. Twelve months of supervised and recorded practical experience in an architect's office is needed and is commonly referred to as the 'first year out'. The first year of compulsory experience after graduation may be in any sector of the building industry, including construction and design.
A part II Architectural Assistant has the above experience in architectural related jobs, but has completed another further two years of study for a diploma or a secondary degree in architecture, known as Part 2. A part II Architectural Assistant also completes another twelve months' supervised and recorded work experience known as the 'second year out';
Both Part 1 and Part II Architectural Assistants will need to have good design skills, be able to deal with clients out on site, have excellent communication skills, good time management skills and leadership skills, an inquisitive and creative mind that is accepting of change and have experience in computer aided design skills, such as AutoCAD.
