The CAD Manager's role has arisen over the years out of a growing need for compliance of company standards and is usually found in the larger engineering and architectural companies. The role in smaller companies can often be part time alongside engineering / architectural duties or IT duties. A varied role, it can comprise some or all of the elements of the following duties:
Configuration and implementation of CAD software.
Design, development and delivery of corporate CAD standards.
Enforcement of company CAD procedures.
User support and training development work.
Monitoring and review of the utilisation of CAD on projects.
Integration of CAD with other linked applications including databases, desktop publishing, and extranet systems.
Liaison with IT personnel and external collaborators to provide integrated technology solutions.
Maintenance and delivery of training material, standards drawings and libraries.
Knowledge of current software trends and technical development. An important factor in CAD Management is an understanding of the Engineering or Architectural process, hence the role usually falls to those with some years of CAD or design experience behind them. Good problem solving skills are essential and the ability to relate to all types of people. IT knowledge, whilst not essential, can be an advantage in companies where the role is linked to the IT team. There is currently a shortage of CAD Managers within the UK.
