Facilities Managers work within the Facilities Management sector. Every company in the entire UK with more than about 50 staff could in theory employ a facilities manager.  Facilities management is not only carried out by dedicated facilities managers, but in some organisations facilities responsibilities could also be looked after by a Human Resources Manager, an Office Manager, a Finance Manager, a General Manager, an Operations Manager, an Administration Manager or Branch Manager.

While many skills are transferable across a wide range of Facilities Management activities, it is becoming increasingly evident that market-specific skills are now also a major factor in the staffing and management of FM teams. Banks, Law firms, Financial companies, Hi-Tech, Retail, Science, Not-for-Profit and the Public Sector all have very specific needs in order to ensure they remain at the leading edge of their own particular profession or sector.
