Homelessness Jobs

Homelessness officer jobs and vacancies are available across the UK. Local authorities have statutory duties under the Housing Act 1996 and the Homelessness Act 2002, to secure long-term accommodation for homeless people. 

As a Homelessness officer you will work either for a local authority or for organisations working with people with special housing needs or who find themselves made homeless.  The role of a Homelessness Officer is to first determine whether an applicant is eligible for housing assistance from the council, by using the relevant legislation to assess their claim. Your main focus is to deal with immediate crises of individuals or families who are homeless because of family break up, discharge from prison, problems of drug or alcohol abuse or financial difficulties.  It is an investigative role and sometimes, tough decisions have to be taken by refusing a person’s claim who may otherwise seem to be in dire straits.  Should a person or family be accepted for housing assistance they would then be placed on the council’s waiting list or referred to a local housing association who has suitable accommodation.

This is the real sharp end of housing work and Homeless Persons Units are not always the nicest places to work. Homelessness officers often have a background in social work or other aspects of housing management.
