Benefits Assessment Officer Jobs

Benefits assessment officer jobs and vacancies are available across the UK. As a Benefits Assessment Officer, you are the backbone of the benefits service team. Benefits Assessment officers provide information and advice to residents in the council's area on all aspects of housing and council tax benefits.

Claims processing is the main aspect of the job but more experienced Benefits Assessment Officers tackle advanced assessments such as students and the self employed, and will write letters about straight forward decisions to customers. You would answer queries at a counter but might take people to an interview room for more privacy when asking questions. Some benefits officers also visit people in their homes. (Many councils employ visiting officers to visits claimants if further information is required.)  When you have all the information you would calculate the benefits due.

As a Benefits Assessment Officer, you must be experienced in Academy, Riworld, HBIS and IBS.  You normally start as a trainee with a local authority and receive on the job training.
