The International Fund for Animal Welfare

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) works to improve the welfare of wild and domestic animals throughout the world by reducing commercial exploitation of animals, protecting wildlife habitats, and assisting animals in distress. We seek to motivate the public to prevent cruelty to animals and to promote animal welfare and conservation policies that advance the well-being of both animals and people.

IFAW pursues a variety of local, national and global campaigns around the world.  In each region where we work, IFAW’s activities are informed by local customs and culture and tailored to the particular economic and political conditions of that area. All of IFAW’s efforts are rooted in the belief that a world in which animal life can survive and thrive is fundamental to human well-being.

Founded in 1969, IFAW is an animal welfare and conservation organization with offices in 16 countries.   As one of the largest international animal welfare organizations in the world, IFAW has a staff of more than 200 experienced campaigners, legal and political experts, and internationally acclaimed scientists.

With more than one million supporters worldwide, IFAW protects animals and habitats by promoting practical solutions for animals and people. IFAW's notable achievements include: ending Canada's whitecoat seal hunt; helping ban fox hunting in Britain; stopping Mitsubishi's saltworks development in the Pacific gray whale's birthing lagoon; rehabilitating and releasing 18,000 oiled African penguins after the Treasure oil spill in South Africa; and conserving 85,000 sq km of habit -- an area larger than Austria -- for elephants and other endangered species across Africa, India and China.
