Are you ready to take ownership of a fast-growing sustainability and building physics function? A forward-thinking building services consultancy is looking for a highly experienced Associate Director to take a leading role in the delivery and growth of their building performance offering from their London office.

This is a rare opportunity for an experienced professional to step into a strategic leadership position-owning client relationships, delivering technical excellence, growing a team, and shaping the future direction of the sustainability function. In the medium term, there is a clear path to owning your own P&L and leading a dedicated performance engineering unit within the business.

The Opportunity
As Associate Director, you will act as the face of building performance and sustainability, leading the technical delivery of complex projects and working directly with developers, architects, and institutional investors. You will also be responsible for growing and mentoring a new team, driving innovation, and positioning the business as a leader in Net Zero and energy performance strategies.

Key Responsibilities
* Lead delivery of advanced building physics modelling, including TM54, TM59, TM52, Part L/O, and operational energy strategies
* Own and develop key client relationships and act as a senior technical advisor
* Oversee and guide the use of tools such as IES-VE, ApacheSim, and Apache HVAC
* Contribute to and review carbon assessments, compliance modelling, and Net Zero strategies
* Lead recruitment, training, and management of a growing team of performance engineers
* Represent the business externally, contributing to industry forums (e.g. UKGBC, LETI, CIBSE)
* Work closely with senior leadership to shape the service line and move towards P&L ownership

About You
* 10+ years' experience in building physics, building performance, or sustainability consultancy
* Track record of delivering and managing technically complex projects and multidisciplinary teams
* Expert user of IES-VE (especially Apache HVAC), with in-depth understanding of UK building compliance
* Strong commercial awareness, able to identify opportunities and drive growth
* Confident, credible and articulate in front of clients, design teams, and executive stakeholders
* Ambitious, entrepreneurial, and ready to lead a high-impact business unit

A leading building services consultancy is seeking an ambitious and technically excellent Principal - Associate Building Physics Engineer to join their London office. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to build a team from the ground up, act as the face of sustainability and building performance, and work towards leading your own P&L function in the near future.

With a strong pipeline of technically complex, low-energy projects across commercial, residential, education, and healthcare sectors, this role puts you in a strategic position to shape how building performance is delivered across the UK and Europe.

The Role
You'll lead the building physics and performance modelling services, guiding clients and design teams toward high-performance, low-carbon outcomes. From early-stage passive design advice to detailed compliance modelling, you'll drive the technical delivery while growing and mentoring a new team around you.

Key responsibilities include:
* Delivering and reviewing dynamic thermal modelling, energy compliance, and overheating assessments (TM54, TM59, TM52, Part L & O)
* Leading the use of tools such as IES-VE, ApacheSim, and Apache HVAC to assess building performance
* Supporting Net Zero strategies, carbon assessments, and wider sustainability inputs as needed
* Acting as the key client contact, leading presentations, advising design teams, and championing performance-led design
* Growing a new team of engineers under your leadership, with support from the wider practice
* Contributing to business development and eventually taking ownership of your own P&L responsibility

About You
* Degree-qualified with 7+ years' experience in building physics or sustainable design
* Proficient in IES-VE (including Apache HVAC) and familiar with compliance tools and frameworks
* Experienced in leading projects and managing client relationships
* Strong communicator, confident advising stakeholders and representing the practice externally
* Passionate about shaping the future of Net Zero design and performance-driven buildings
* Ready to step into a strategic leadership role and grow a specialist team

Ability to lead, mentor, and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

Experience working to strict deadlines and delivering projects on time.

U-value, heat loss/gain, pipe sizing, pump sizing, duct sizing, fan sizing

Psychrometrics, control valve sizing, BMS systems, thermal modelling
