The Role

About You

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a strong track record in leadership, sustainability consultancy and business development within the built environment sector.

You will ideally possess:

A relevant degree in sustainability, environmental engineering, building services engineering or a related discipline.Membership of a recognised professional body such as CIBSE or equivalent.Approximately 8-10+ years' industry experience with a recognised reputation within the sustainability sector.Extensive knowledge of building physics, sustainable building design and environmental assessment methodologies.Strong understanding of sustainability legislation, industry standards and Building Regulations.Experience developing sustainability strategies for both new-build and existing assets.Strong commercial awareness and financial management experience.Proven ability to lead, mentor and develop high-performing teams.Experience building and maintaining senior-level client relationships.Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills.

Freelance Fully Remote South Africa UK Projects

We are working with a UK consultancy looking to appoint a Senior Sustainability Consultant based in South Africa to support their UK team on a fully remote freelance basis.

This role is focused primarily on building physics, IES modelling, overheating analysis and energy performance assessments. It would suit someone who is technically strong, comfortable working independently, and able to support UK project teams with accurate modelling, reporting and design input.

You will be working on a mix of UK retrofit and new-build projects, supporting the delivery of sustainable and energy-efficient building designs.

The Role
The successful consultant will support the UK sustainability and building performance team with technical modelling and assessment work. The main focus will be producing IES models, carrying out overheating and thermal comfort analysis, supporting energy strategy work, and providing practical design recommendations to improve building performance.

This is not a strategic leadership role. The client is looking for someone who can get involved in the technical delivery, work closely with the UK team, and provide reliable building physics support across live projects.

Key Responsibilities
* Produce and develop IES models for UK building projects.
* Carry out overheating and thermal comfort assessments, including TM59 and Part O
where required.
* Support Part L assessments and energy performance analysis.
* Assist with Energy Strategy Reports and sustainability-related project documentation.
* Review building designs and identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency, comfort
and overall performance.
* Work with architects, engineers and sustainability consultants as part of a wider UK
project team.
* Attend remote design meetings and provide clear technical input where needed.
* Prepare clear, accurate reports and modelling outputs for review by the UK team.
* Support both retrofit and new-build projects across a range of sectors.

Skills & Experience
Applicants are not expected to meet all the criteria. Training will be provided.
* Strong experience in building physics and IES modelling.
* Experience carrying out overheating, thermal comfort and energy performance
assessments.
* Good understanding of UK sustainability and building regulations, particularly Part L, Part
O and TM59.
* Experience supporting Energy Strategy Reports or similar sustainability documentation.
* Ability to work remotely and communicate clearly with UK-based project teams.
* Previous experience working on UK building design projects would be advantageous but
not essential.
* Knowledge of SAP, SBEM or Elmhurst would be beneficial, but not essential if the
candidate is strong in IES and building physics.
