The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Associate Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing multidisciplinary consultancy in its Reading office.
This is a key senior position within the business, offering an experienced mechanical engineer the opportunity to combine technical expertise with leadership, client engagement, business development and strategic input.
As an Associate, you will play an important role in shaping the mechanical engineering capability within the business and will be part of the senior leadership team, helping to influence the direction and continued growth of the practice.
The Role
As an Associate Mechanical Design Engineer, you will take responsibility for delivering high-quality mechanical engineering solutions across a varied portfolio of projects.
You will work closely with clients, architects, contractors and other engineering disciplines, providing technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle.
Key responsibilities will include:
Leading mechanical design and delivery from concept through to completion.
Managing, mentoring and developing engineers within the wider team.
Providing technical leadership, guidance and quality assurance across projects.
Building strong relationships with clients and acting as a trusted technical adviser.
Working collaboratively with architects, structural engineers, project managers, surveyors and other disciplines.
Preparing and reviewing mechanical design calculations, specifications, drawings and technical reports.
Ensuring projects are delivered to the required technical, commercial, programme and quality standards.
Attending client and design team meetings and presenting technical solutions.
Supporting fee proposals, tenders and business development opportunities.
Identifying opportunities to grow the mechanical engineering offering and strengthen existing client relationships.
Contributing to the strategic development of the mechanical engineering team and wider office.
Supporting the continued growth and success of the business at a senior leadership level.

About You
We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer who is ready to step into an Associate-level position and take on greater leadership, commercial and strategic responsibility.
You will ideally have:
Significant experience in mechanical building services design.
A strong technical understanding of mechanical engineering principles and building services.
Experience delivering projects within a consultancy environment.
The ability to lead projects and provide technical direction to others.
Experience mentoring or managing engineers.
Strong communication and client-facing skills.
Commercial awareness and an understanding of fee proposals and business development.
The confidence to contribute to senior-level discussions and strategic decision-making.
Ideally, Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
Most importantly, you should be someone who wants to lead, influence and grow. You will be comfortable taking ownership, developing relationships and playing an active role in the continued success of the business.

The Role
Working closely with the Directors, Engineers, and BIM team, you will lead MEP projects through RIBA Stages 1-6, ensuring successful technical delivery, commercial performance, and client satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities
* Lead mechanical design projects across a range of commercial and mixed-use
developments.
* Act as the main point of contact for clients, contractors, architects, and project
stakeholders.
* Manage project delivery, ensuring quality, programme, and commercial targets are
achieved.
* Oversee surveys, reports, specifications, calculations, and technical designs.
* Coordinate mechanical designs, drawings, BIM models, and technical submissions.
* Undertake site inspections, commissioning reviews, and provide technical support
throughout project delivery.
* Ensure compliance with Building Regulations, CDM requirements, sustainability
targets, and industry best practice.
* Mentor junior engineers and support their technical development.
* Assist with fee proposals, business development activities, and recruitment.
About You
* 10+ years experience within Building Services Mechanical Design.
* Degree qualified and ideally a member of CIBSE, IMechE, or a similar professional
body.
* Experience delivering refurbishment, fit-out, and commercial projects.
* Proficient with AutoCAD, Revit, IES VE, Hevacomp, H2X, Bluebeam Revu, and
Microsoft Office.
* Strong communication, report writing, and client-facing skills.
* Commercially aware with an interest in business development and team leadership.
