A leading MEP contractor is seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join a well-established and growing electrical design team in London. This is a senior technical appointment within a delivery-focused, contractor-led environment operating across some of the UK's most complex building services projects.

The design team consists of approximately 25 engineers, supported by a strong secured pipeline of work providing at least two years of forward workload visibility.

The Opportunity

You will take a leading role in delivering electrical design across multiple high-value projects through RIBA Stages 1-5, combining technical leadership, coordination, and hands-on design oversight.

The current workload includes a major hyperscale data centre development (£400m+ core project value), forming a flagship scheme within the business, alongside a strong portfolio of complex commercial, institutional, and mixed-use developments across London.

Live and upcoming project portfolio includes:

Large-scale urban redevelopment scheme within a key central London regeneration zone, involving multiple mixed-use assetsOver-site development above major transport infrastructure in a prime central London locationHigh-profile commercial development at a major central London addressSignificant works at a nationally recognised cultural institution involving sensitive refurbishment and infrastructure upgradeMajor capital programme within a leading UK higher education campus involving phased redevelopment and expansion worksHyperscale data centre programme with mission-critical electrical infrastructure and high resilience requirements


This is a highly design-led contractor environment where engineers are trusted with real ownership, technical responsibility, and direct client engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Mechanical design delivery across multiple concurrent major projectsManage design development from early concept through detailed design and construction stages (RIBA 1-5)Provide technical leadership, mentoring.Coordinate with internal disciplines, clients, and external consultantsSupport delivery of mission-critical and large-scale infrastructure environmentsEnsure compliance with relevant UK regulations, standards, and client requirementsContribute to design optimisation, value engineering, and technical innovation

About You

The Opportunity

Working alongside the Directors, Engineers, and BIM specialists, you'll take ownership of MEP projects from concept through to completion (RIBA Stages 1-6), ensuring exceptional technical delivery while maintaining strong commercial performance and outstanding client satisfaction.

This is far more than a project delivery role. You'll be a key figure within the business, leading projects, developing client relationships, mentoring engineers, supporting business growth, and helping shape the future direction of the consultancy. With succession planning firmly in place, you'll benefit from a clear pathway to Director, giving you the opportunity to progress into a strategic leadership position as the business continues to grow.

What You'll Be Doing

* Lead the mechanical design and delivery of a diverse range of commercial, mixed-use, refurbishment, and fit-out projects.
* Manage projects through all RIBA Stages (1-6), ensuring successful technical and commercial delivery.
* Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, architects, contractors, and key project stakeholders.
* Take full responsibility for project delivery, ensuring quality, programme, and commercial objectives are consistently achieved.
* Oversee surveys, technical reports, specifications, calculations, and detailed mechanical designs.
* Coordinate mechanical designs, BIM models, technical submissions, and drawing packages.
* Carry out site inspections, commissioning reviews, and provide technical support throughout each project lifecycle.
* Ensure designs comply with current Building Regulations, CDM requirements, sustainability objectives, and industry best practice.
* Mentor and develop junior engineers, fostering technical excellence across the team.
* Support business development through client engagement, fee proposals, recruitment, and identifying new opportunities.

About You

You'll be an experienced Mechanical Building Services Engineer who enjoys taking ownership, building lasting client relationships, and leading successful project teams.

You'll ideally have:

* 10+ years experience within Building Services Mechanical Design.
* A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
* Membership of CIBSE, IMechE, or another relevant professional institution (or working towards chartership).
* Proven experience delivering commercial, refurbishment, fit-out, and mixed-use projects.
* Strong technical knowledge with proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, IES VE, Hevacomp, H2X, Bluebeam Revu, and Microsoft Office.
* Excellent communication, report writing, and stakeholder management skills.
* Commercial awareness with an interest in business development, team leadership, and contributing to the continued growth of the business.
