The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Design & Estimating Engineer to support a well-established construction and commercial fit-out contractor on a contract basis.
This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially minded building services specialist with a strong background in electrical design, pre-construction and estimating, ideally within the commercial fit-out, refurbishment and construction sectors.
Working on a hybrid basis, you will play a key role in supporting projects from initial tender enquiry and feasibility through to detailed cost planning, design development and tender submission. You will work closely with the pre-construction, commercial and project delivery teams to ensure proposals are technically robust, commercially competitive and aligned with client requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare accurate and competitive electrical estimates for commercial fit-out, refurbishment and construction projects.
Review tender documentation, drawings, specifications and employers requirements to establish project scope and identify potential risks or omissions.
Develop electrical design solutions and provide technical input throughout the pre-construction and tender stages.
Undertake electrical take-offs, quantity surveying and cost planning for labour, materials, plant and subcontract packages.
Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations to ensure best value and commercial competitiveness.
Identify value engineering opportunities and propose cost-effective solutions without compromising quality, compliance or performance.
Liaise with clients, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors to clarify technical and commercial requirements.
Support tender submissions, including the preparation of cost breakdowns, tender clarifications, exclusions and qualifications.
Review existing designs and specifications to identify discrepancies, design gaps and opportunities for improvement.
Ensure proposed electrical installations comply with relevant regulations, industry standards and project specifications.
Work collaboratively with pre-construction and delivery teams to support a smooth transition from tender to project delivery.
Essential Experience & Skills
Proven experience in electrical building services design and estimating within the construction, commercial fit-out or refurbishment sectors.
Strong pre-construction experience, with a demonstrable track record of preparing and managing electrical tenders.
Solid technical knowledge of commercial electrical installations, including lighting, small power, distribution, containment, fire alarm, emergency lighting and associated building services systems.
Ability to interpret electrical drawings, specifications, schedules and technical documentation.
Strong understanding of project costing, labour allowances, material pricing and subcontract procurement.
Experience identifying design risks, scope gaps, technical interfaces and commercial opportunities during the tender process.
Excellent attention to detail, organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tender deadlines.
Confident communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with clients, consultants and supply-chain partners.
A proactive, commercially focused approach with the ability to work independently and as part of a wider team.
Working Arrangements
Contract position offering flexibility and the opportunity to support a busy pre-construction function.
Hybrid working, combining remote working with attendance at the contractors office and/or project locations as required.
Opportunity to contribute to a varied portfolio of commercial construction, fit-out and refurbishment projects.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an experienced electrical building services professional who combines strong technical design knowledge with first-class estimating and pre-construction capability.
You will understand the commercial pressures of the fit-out and construction industry, be comfortable working to tight tender deadlines and have the confidence to challenge designs, identify opportunities and deliver accurate, competitive electrical tenders.
If you have a strong blend of electrical design, estimating and pre-construction experience and are looking for your next contract opportunity within the commercial fit-out sector, we would like to hear from you.
